Flores

Immigrating from Honduras at the age of 16 and being pregnant was the start of Lurvin Flores' ongoing journey to success. She put her own education on hold to provide for her children while assimilating to a new country and a new language. She worked many years in retail, resulting in an injury, which put her on disability. During this time of rehabilitating her health, she was introduced to the Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School by a former student's positive experience.

In 2018, Lurvin enrolled in the NLM Adult School's High School Diploma program by taking her first course in the Individualized Learning Center. The self-paced online course gave her the freedom to study and get her health back on track. She failed her first Economics test, making her feel upset and giving up on the idea of school. Upon the encouragement of her teacher, she continued to move forward and eventually completed her first course, many courses after, and finally received her high school diploma along with scholarships for higher education.

During her time at the NLM Adult School, Lurvin served as the school's student council representative. She interacted with fellow peers, school staff, district staff, and the community. Lurvin credits the adult school for providing her with the tools to succeed. Upon graduation from the NLM Adult School, Lurvin entered Cerritos College and earned her AA in Business Administration. School during the pandemic was not a problem for Lurvin, because she had already done online studying.

At Cerritos College, she was on the Dean's List and President's List every semester. She decided to transfer to a four-year university and applied to two UCs and two Cal States. She got accepted to all four schools but decided to attend Cal State University Fullerton on a full scholarship. She is currently studying to obtain her business degree with an emphasis in Human Resources. Her future career goal is to work in the health care field and eventually earn her Master's.

Lurvin is proud of herself for not giving up and also proud of her children and their successes. Her oldest recently graduated from Chapman Law School and has passed the California State Bar. Her second is graduating from USC this May with a degree in Computer Science and already has a job waiting for him at Microsoft. Her third and fourth children are in high school and doing amazingly well, so she hopes that they will follow in their mom and siblings' footsteps.
