Tavita Sosa-Velazquez
Corning Adult School
Nominated in 2015
For Tavita Sosa-Velazquez, attaining her high school diploma was extremely important to her for several reasons. She is a wife and mother of five and she wanted her children to know the importance of education. By completing her high school education, she would prove to herself that she was capable of earning this academic achievement, and she was hopeful that with the accomplishment she would find meaningful employment at a fair wage.
Tavita’s drive to accomplish her goal was impressive. She attended Corning Adult School from the time it opened until it closed each day. After an unexpected job opportunity presented itself at a local insurance office, she continued to go to school on her lunch break and in the evenings. Her employer recognized her abilities and determination and offered her the opportunity to become an insurance broker. She is currently preparing to take the final broker's test, which will earn her the title of CA Property and Casualty Agent/Broker. She plans to enroll at Butte College to obtain a degree in Office and Business Administration. Tavita shared, “I feel a sense of personal accomplishment!” and she helps encourage others to finish their high school diploma.
