Erica Aguilar’s journey is a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of education, perseverance, and a mother’s unwavering love. What began as a desire to better support her non-verbal son with a learning disability grew into a remarkable story of personal transformation, community leadership, and advocacy.
As a first-time mother, Erica wanted her son to thrive but often felt uncertain about how best to help him learn, communicate, and reach his full potential. Determined to gain the knowledge she needed, she made the difficult decision to enroll in a Child Development class at Norwalk La Mirada Adult School, even though attending evening classes meant sacrificing valuable time with her family. She viewed education as an investment not only in herself, but in her son’s future.
From her very first class with instructor Ms. Kristy Cota, Erica found both inspiration and practical strategies that she immediately applied at home. She introduced developmentally appropriate activities, explored the benefits of process art, and created opportunities for her son to express himself through open-ended learning experiences. As she watched his participation, communication, and confidence grow, she saw firsthand the impact of her commitment to learning.
Inspired by her success, Erica continued her education, completing the Child Development Certification Program and earning more than 30 units in Child Development and Early Childhood Education while maintaining straight A’s and excellent attendance. Specialized coursework in special education, behavior management, and supporting families of children with special needs deepened her knowledge and strengthened her voice as an advocate.
Today, Erica is a respected community leader, peer mentor, guest speaker, and advocate for neurodivergent students and their families. Her passion for inclusive education led her to a successful career as an assistant to a special education attorney, where she helps families navigate complex educational systems. Through her service on advisory committees, leadership teams, and community organizations, Erica continues to empower others. Her story demonstrates how one educational opportunity can ignite a passion, transform a family’s future, and inspire lasting change in an entire community.
