Mariam Ouattara’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the transformative impact of adult education. Arriving in the United States as a native French speaker, Mariam faced the daunting challenge of adapting to a new country while navigating a language she did not yet speak fluently. Rather than allowing this barrier to limit her opportunities, she chose to take a courageous first step by enrolling in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Berkeley Adult School.

From the beginning, Mariam distinguished herself through her dedication, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn. She worked diligently to improve her reading, writing, speaking, and academic communication skills. Her instructors praised her active participation, thoughtful contributions, and ability to apply feedback effectively. As her confidence grew, so did her ambitions.

Mariam’s achievements are even more remarkable considering the challenges she faced outside the classroom. While pursuing her education, she balanced the responsibilities of raising three young children and supporting her husband through serious health difficulties. Despite caregiving demands, financial pressures, and emotional stress, she remained committed to her studies, consistently attending classes and completing assignments with excellence.

After completing her ESL studies, Mariam successfully transitioned to Berkeley City College, where she attained degrees in both Economics and Business Administration. Drawing on the academic foundation and self-advocacy skills she developed through adult education, she has embraced college-level coursework with confidence and determination. Her goal is to build on her current achievements and continue her education at UC Davis in pursuit of a degree in Economics.

Beyond her own accomplishments, Mariam is a source of encouragement for fellow students, particularly immigrants and English learners. She readily shares advice, offers support, and helps create a welcoming learning environment for others facing similar challenges.

Today, Mariam’s journey represents far more than academic success. Through education, she has gained confidence, expanded career opportunities, strengthened her ability to support her family, and become a role model for her children and community. Her story demonstrates that when determination meets opportunity, extraordinary achievements are possible.
