Alida Agnes Garcilazzo’s journey is a powerful example of how adult education can transform lives, open doors to opportunity, and create lasting impact across generations. Her story reflects perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.

When Alida enrolled at Lynwood Community Adult School (LCAS), she faced the challenge of learning English while adapting to a new environment. As an English as a Second Language (ESL) student, she often had to work harder than others to understand lessons and build the confidence needed to participate in classroom discussions. Despite these obstacles, she approached every challenge with determination and a positive attitude.

Alida quickly became a source of encouragement for her classmates. She practiced English with fellow students, helped them navigate assignments, and contributed to a welcoming and supportive classroom community. With the guidance of her teachers and staff at LCAS, she strengthened her language skills, developed self-confidence, and successfully earned her high school diploma in 1997.

That achievement became the foundation for a remarkable educational journey. Building on the skills and confidence she gained through adult education, Alida earned a Child Development Certificate, an Associate of Arts degree, a Bachelor’s degree, and ultimately a Master’s degree along with a teaching credential. Each accomplishment brought her closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming an educator.

Today, Alida has dedicated 24 years to serving the Lynwood community and currently works as a Transitional Kindergarten teacher. Her ability to communicate in both English and Spanish has allowed her to connect with students and families, many of whom share experiences similar to her own. Over the years, she advanced from bilingual instructional assistant to site facilitator and, ultimately, to classroom teacher.

Beyond her professional success, Alida is a devoted mother of three daughters and a role model who demonstrates the value of perseverance, education, and lifelong learning. Her journey illustrates how adult education can empower individuals to achieve their dreams while creating a positive impact that extends throughout families and communities.
