Dalila Barboza’s journey is a powerful example of perseverance, purpose, and the life-changing impact of adult education. In 2023, after receiving a recommendation from her daughter’s preschool teacher, Dalila enrolled in the Child Development Program at Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School. As a stay at home mother raising three young children, her initial goal was simple: gain the knowledge needed to better support her children’s academic, social, and emotional development.

Born in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, and brought to the United States at the age of four, Dalila understands firsthand the challenges many English learners face. Her own experiences transitioning from a Spanish-speaking school environment to an English-only district shaped her deep compassion for students and families navigating similar experiences today.

Years earlier, Dalila had attempted to pursue higher education, but as a single mother working full-time without access to childcare, continuing college was not possible. Although she put her educational goals on hold, she never abandoned her dream of working with children. Returning to school more than 15 years later gave her the opportunity to rediscover her passion and confidence as a learner.

Through Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School, Dalila earned 21 units in Child Development, completed a practicum work experience course, and built a professional portfolio while developing strong interviewing and job readiness skills. She successfully passed the district’s paraeducator exam on her first attempt, a major accomplishment that boosted her confidence and inspired her to pursue new opportunities.

In December 2024, Dalila achieved her dream of becoming a Bilingual English Learner Paraeducator. Today, she supports 53 English learner students across kindergarten through fifth grade, helping them strengthen language skills and achieve academic success. She also serves as a mentor and role model for aspiring educators while continuing her own education as a full-time college student studying Educational Technology.

Dalila’s story demonstrates how education, encouragement, and determination can transform lives. By investing in herself, she has created a brighter future for her family, empowered countless students, and proven that it is never too late to pursue a meaningful purpose.
