Alexander Clemente’s life is a powerful example of how adult education can transform lives. Born into poverty in Guatemala and raised by his grandparents after being abandoned by his parents, Alexander developed a deep desire to make a positive impact. His journey to the U.S. in 2017 was marked by danger, injury, and kidnapping, yet he remained determined to build a better future.

Upon arriving in the Bay Area, exploitative jobs pushed him to pursue education. He began at San Mateo Adult School (SMACE) in ESL Beginning One, quickly advancing through multiple levels. In 2019, he earned his GED in just three months and enrolled at the College of San Mateo. Despite challenges as an undocumented student, he persevered, earning an Associate degree in Biology and transferring to UC Santa Cruz, where he completed two Bachelor of Science degrees—in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Cognitive Science—and a minor in Spanish Studies.

Alexander also completed Clinical Medical Assistant training at SMACE and is now a student at Skyline College. He volunteers extensively—as a SMACE Student Ambassador, GED and ESL tutor, Red Cross volunteer, and assistant in Career Education classes. He recently earned his C-33 painting license and started his own business to support his education.

His story reflects extraordinary resilience, community service, and a commitment to becoming a doctor. Alexander’s journey is a testament to the power of second chances and the life-changing impact of adult education.
