Matin Samimiat
Golden West College
Nominated in 2025
Matin immigrated from Iran to the U.S. in February 2016 to escape persecution under an oppressive regime. After spending a few years adjusting to his new environment, he enrolled at Golden West College (GWC) in late 2022 with a clear vision for his future. His primary goal was to pass the GED and earn his diploma—a crucial step toward advancing his education and career.
While working full-time on a graveyard shift as a security guard, Matin joined GWC GED Preparation courses under the Adult Education Department. During this time, he discovered the Adult Dual Enrollment Program offered through the AEP office. Seizing the opportunity, he began taking credit-bearing General Education courses while preparing for his GED exams, which he successfully passed by the end of the semester. With his GED completed, he set his sights on earning an associate in Science for Transfer degree in Administration of Justice.
Despite the demands of full-time employment and caring for his younger brother, Matin remained steadfast in his education. With guidance from an AEP counselor, he secured financial aid and immersed himself in his studies. His dedication paid off—by the end of 2024, he had not only earned his AST degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA but also met the requirements for UC TAG, fast-tracking his admission to UC Irvine to pursue Criminology, Law, and Society.
Outstanding achievements have marked Matin’s academic journey. He has been recognized on the Dean’s and President’s lists for his exceptional performance and has earned multiple scholarships to support his education. Beyond the classroom, he has actively contributed to student government and the sustainability committee, led his Young Americans for Freedom chapter, and fostered a strong community among his peers. Passionate about helping others, he enjoys assisting fellow adult learners with the challenges of learning English and actively informs them about the benefits of noncredit programs, encouraging them to take advantage of available resources.
With aspirations of attending law school, Matin remains committed to his long-term goal of becoming a prosecutor. His journey exemplifies the transformative power of adult education, demonstrating how access to educational opportunities can empower individuals to achieve their dreams. Matin’s story is a testament to perseverance, ambition, and the life-changing impact of programs designed to support adult learners.
