A New Chapter: Carlos Ortega’s Journey from Housekeeper to Certified Nursing Assistant
Carlos Ortega’s journey is a testament to the transformational power of education and support at Monrovia Community Adult School (MCAS). A dedicated English Learner, Carlos came to MCAS seeking a new direction after working as a housekeeper at Monrovia Post-Acute. Today, he proudly holds the title of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), a feat he attributes to the innovative programs offered by the school.
“MCAS changed my life,” Carlos says with earnest gratitude. With an unwavering desire to better his situation and provide for his family, he enrolled in the school’s no-cost language acquisition and CNA training program. The opportunity allowed him not only to develop vital nursing skills but also to improve his English proficiency—an essential factor in his ability to succeed in the healthcare field.
Carlos faced the daunting challenge of navigating medical terminology and patient care concepts in a language that was once foreign to him. However, he found incredible support from his dedicated instructors. “My CNA training teacher, Ms. Crystal, was very patient and helpful. She really cared about our understanding,” Carlos recalls. He also credits Ms. High, his Vocational ESL teacher, for giving him the confidence to communicate effectively in English. “Thanks to her, I learned to speak comfortably, which made a big difference in my studies and my life.”
The journey was not without its challenges. Carlos faced moments of doubt, especially as he tackled rigorous CNA coursework. However, he firmly believes that with determination and the right support, no obstacle is insurmountable. “My CNA classes were very challenging for me, but with the help of my teachers, I was able to understand English and be successful,” he reflects.
After completing the program and passing his licensing exam, Carlos is now working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Monrovia Post-Acute, where he can provide compassionate care to those in need. His journey embodies the spirit of perseverance, and he serves as an inspiration to others in the community.
Carlos’s story is a powerful reminder of how accessible education can empower individuals and transform lives. As he continues to thrive in his career, he remains a proud advocate for the programs at MCAS, celebrating the support he received that allowed him to achieve his dreams. For Carlos, this is just the beginning.
