Rasika Sanjeewani Weerasinghe
Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School
Nominated in 2024
Rasika was born in Sri Lanka and had made a life for herself there. A husband, two children and a successful career in the arts. Most would be content with this life, but after her son was accepted to a University in the United States, she and her family were selected for a green card status through the Diversity Immigrant Visa program. She made the difficult decision to start a life in a new country and explore new opportunities.
“It is time for me to dream” these are words Rasika said with pride and resolve, as her adult children are now independent. She said the biggest obstacle was getting started. From the beginning she had a difficult time articulating her education and as a result limiting her employment search. Not deterred, she began her adult education with child development classes and continued with a high school diploma. In 2023, she graduated at the top of her class and was selected as a class speaker. Now attending Cerritos College, she continues her stellar academics enrolled with the “Teacher Track” pathway. She is currently on her way to transfer to Cal State Long Beach and will earn a teaching credential in a couple of years.
Rasika’s training at the adult school has helped further her academic growth and employability in a career in education. She is currently working with a Montessori school and during her free time tutors’ children and arranges donations to people affected by the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings.
Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School is honored to nominate Rasika for the Students Succeed award and wish her continued success in her endeavors.
