In Ellis Spector's Advanced multi-level ESL class there is a different theme everyday. Topics are wide ranging; U.S. History, civics, and how the government works; holidays and how they are celebrated in different cultures; even some business math and how to handle your checkbook. Often the class focuses on practical life skills, such as reading medication labels, and role playing interactions such as seeing the doctor and going to the bank. Additionally, there is a strong focus on resume writing and practice job interviews.

There is always lots of discussion as students sit in a circle around Mr. Spector so that he can look directly at every student and each student could see others. Everyone gets a turn, and discussions topics include social issues such as the role of women and whether husbands help around the house, and handling emergencies. Newspapers and videos are used to facilitate discussions on these issues and current events.

Guest speakers are also invited, such as a group from the Human Rights Commission telling the students what to do if they ever have any problem with that issue.

Mr. Spector emphasizes reading, speaking, writing compositions, dictation, computers, and grammar. Grammar is considered very important, "you can do ‘street' speaking," says Mr. Spector, "but to get a good job you need more. Grammar is the foundation on which you build the house."

Franklin Community Adult School provides students with a richly diverse and substantive educational program, and, clearly, the kindness and inspiration which this highly experienced teacher gives his students has a profound effect on their learning.
