The Adult School shall provide quality, lifelong educational opportunities and support services that address the unique and changing needs of individuals in our diverse multicultural community.

The San Bernardino Adult School is part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District. It has been in existence since April 5, 1920 when the School Board passed a resolution creating the Adult School. Throughout the years, the Adult School has gone through many changes; nevertheless, the schools objective to provide education based on the needs of the community remains unchanged.

Classes are offered in over 50 different locations in the surrounding area. These include doctors' offices for the medical programs, senior centers for the Older Adults Program and locations for the Adult with Disabilities Program. Many of the classes offered at the Adult School are provided with no costs to the students. Some of the free classes include:

  • English as a Second Language
  • High School Diploma
  • Computer Literacy for High School Diploma
  • Adult Basic Education
  • Parent Education
  • Adults with Disabilities
  • Older Adult Program

English as a Second Language:
In 1999, the ESL Department was awarded a Program of Excellence designation from the CA Department of Education in recognition of its 30 hour/week program, numerous student services, quality staff, on-going staff development opportunities, and continuously meeting the needs of the diverse ESL population of San Bernardino. Among the services available to ESL students are free child care and parenting classes, couseling, GED preparation, student volunteer groups, job and health fairs, and scholarship opportunities.

Currently, Distance Learning opportunities are being developed for those potential students who are otherwise unable to attend any of the conventional classes. District sites throughout the city have been targeted and curriculum is being readied with plans to begin in February 2006.

GED Test Preparation:
In addition to offering GED Test Preparation classes, San Bernardino Adult School is also a GED test center. The test is administered over the course of three afternoons. Examinees are not required to take a class or a practice test.
