City College of San Francisco, winner of the 2004 MetLife Excellence Award, is about Student Success – our basic task is to help students succeed in life, to enable students to successfully meet their goals. All segments of our college community – from support staff to faculty to administration to trustees to the larger community -- work together to insure the success of our students. For more than thirty years, the ESL Department at the college has provided a rich array of programs to serve the immigrant population – in San Francisco. Through a broad curriculum of both non-credit and credit instruction, students gain the necessary language skills for successful completion of vocational, academic, and transfer programs. Diverse learning opportunities help students to access the English speaking world and the diverse cultures of the United States, to achieve success with their personal, educational and vocational goals, and to benefit and contribute as members of a larger community.

City College has one of the largest, if not the largest ESL program in the country. There are over 30,000 students in the non-credit program and over 4,000 student in the credit program. There are around 250 full-time instructors and 120 part-time instructors.

The Chinatown/Northbeach campus of City College of San Francisco serves more than 6,500 students, seven days a week. Part of the City College of San Francisco ESL program, the Chinatown/Northbeach campus has been meeting the lifelong learning needs of the students located throughout the Chinatown, Northbeach and Marina districts of San Francisco for over 30 years.
