Charles A. Jones Skills and Business Education Center

About the school:

The Charles Jones Career & Education Center offers high-quality, affordable career technical education programs in twenty different career fields. The school also offers Adult Basic Education, GED Preparation, and English as a Second Language. The campus is home to a One- Stop Career Center and a very large number of onsite partners that support and assist students as they progress through their programs. A partial list of partners includes the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA), which funds not only the Career Center, but six Case Manager/Teachers; the Employment Development Department; Job Corps, California Indian Manpower Consortium, Bach Viet, Asian Resources, Native American Tribal TANF; the Veterans Administration, the Salvation Army; the National Guard, as well as a host of other community-based organizations. Financial aid is offered to students who qua1if through the federally-funded Pell Grant. Financial aid is also available to veterans through the VA loan program, and private student loans are available for students in some programs.

The school offers the following programs: Medical Assisting Informatics, Pharmacy Technician, Vocational Nursing, Certified Nurse Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Court Reporting, Administrative Assistant, Accounting Technician, Heating & Air Conditioning, Cisco Networking/A+ Certification, Auto Body Repair & Restoration, and Diesel Mechanics, among others.

For the past ten years the school has hosted an orientation for former offenders who are released back into Sacramento County each week. Through this route, this clientele is introduced to a wide array of social service providers and educational opportunities, and through a partnership with the Sacramento Food Bank, each leaves the orientation with a bag of groceries. Research has clearly demonstrated that education is the key to the successful reentry of this population, and many attendees do, in fact, enroll in school and begin a new journey of education, training, employment, and productivity.

One of the most successful strategies for student recruitment and support has been the Wednesday Weekly Orientation at which prospective students are introduced to the school’s programs and services, followed by an opportunity to meet and talk with staff members from the various disciplines. Prospective students then take the CASAS assessment instrument, and may stay for a financial aid workshop if they wish to do so. We are fortunate to have a One-Stop Career Center onsite, as well as a fully staffed Skills Training Employment Program staffed by six case manager/teachers who provide immeasurable assistance and support for our students.

The Charles Jones Career & Education Center is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, receiving a straight six year accreditation in 2008. In addition, the school has been awarded the Program of Excellence designation three times by the California Department of Education.
